GAME RULES:

1. STARTING A GAME

Golf or Die is best played with four players. Start by assigning each player a number from one to four. The numbers correspond to the dots on the 'Teams' die (see below), which determines the team pairings after each roll. Each player starts with three chips. Pick one person to be 'The Bank.' This person is responsible for handing out the poker chips.

2. ROLLING THE DICE

Two dice are used in the game. Die #1 determines the team pairings for the hole, and Die #2 designates the game that is to be played on that hole. A player will roll the dice on each tee box to generate a random set of teams and a game. The rolling order should follow the sequence in which players were assigned their numbers at the start of the round. For instance: Player One rolls on hole one, Player Two on hole two, and so on. Play the game and team combination that is determined by each roll, and repeat this process on every hole.

3. KEEPING SCORE

Keep track of the score by using the miniature poker chips. The winners of each hole earn chips. No chips are awarded for ties. Any player that runs out of chips must earn their way back into the game by winning a hole.

4. MAKING SIDE BETS

Golf or Die Making Side Bets

Be bold and mix it up by making side bets throughout the round! Players can wager their poker chips against any opposing player, for any reason, on any hole. For example, you can bet on whether you will sink a putt, drive a green, or make a birdie. All bets can be either accepted or refused. There are an infinite ways to place your bets, so get creative!

OUR FAVORITE SIDE BETS

  • Birdie Bonus: Anyone who makes a birdie throughout the round gets one chip from each opposing player.
  • Sandy Saves: Anyone who makes a par or better from a sand trap gets one chip from each opposing player.
  • Pressure Putts: Bet randomly on big putts throughout the round. Players can change odds based on the difficulty of the putt (i.e. give 3 to 1 odds on a 20 footer, 1 to 1 odds on a 6 footer).
  • Bad Blow Ups: Pay a chip back to the bank for any triple bogey.
  • Low Round Bonus: The player with the lowest gross or net score gets 5 chips from the bank at the end of the round.
  • Rough Round Penalty: The player with the highest gross or net score pays one chip to the each opponent at the end of the round.

5. CROWNING THE WINNER

In Golf or Die, the winner takes all! The player with the most chips at the end of the round wins the game. To pump up the pressure, assign a specific dollar value to each chip. Pay the winner, based on the chip differences, at the end of the round.

HOW TO PAY THE WINNER

The winner will collect from the three losing players. If a dollar value was assigned to each poker chip, then the amount collected is equal to the difference between the winner's chip count and each losing player.

PLAYING WITH 2 OR 3 PLAYERS

Don't have a full foursome? No problem! You can still roll the 'Games' die on every hole. Each hole is a free-for-all and a random game.

Gameplay is exactly the same. The only exception is that Low Ball Total will be played as Best Ball, with the winner gaining 2 chips.

    DICE RULES

    Die #1: Team Pairings

    Die #2: Games

    • Three total chips are awarded during this game. Adhere to proper shot order etiquette: after everyone has hit their tee shots, the players farthest from the hole should hit their shots and putts first.
    • Bingo: The first team to hit the green earns one chip (longest shot that lands on the green).
    • Bango: After all balls are on the green, the team that is closest to the pin earns one chip.
    • Bongo: The first team to sink their ball in the hole earns one chip (longest putt or shot made).
    • Each player receives the cumulative number of chips earned by their team. It is possible for a team to earn two chips with the other team earning one chip.

      • Add up the total number of putts for each team.
      • The players on the team with the fewest combined putts win one chip.
      • If the roller is playing solo against the field, the roller's total number of putts is tripled and matched against the sum of the three scores from the opposing team.

      • If the hole is a Par 4 or 5, play Longest Drive. The players on the team with the longest drive win one chip. The drive must be in the fairway. The winner is determined by whichever ball is closest to the flag for the second shot
      • If the hole is a Par 3, play Closest to the Pin. The players on the team that hit their tee shot closest to the pin win one chip. The tee shot must be on the green.

      • Add up the scores achieved by each team. The team with the lowest combined score wins one chip.
      • Example: your team scores 5 & 5, and the opponents score 4 & 7. Your team wins for your total score of 10 (5+5), which beats their team total of 11 (4+7). If the total scores are a tie, then no chips are awarded.
      • If the roller is playing solo against the field, the roller's score is tripled and matched against the sum of the three scores from the opposing team. If a Free for All is rolled, the player with the lowest score on the hole wins one chip.

      • Add up the total number of FIRS (fairways in regulation), GIRS (greens in regulation), and Pars (or better) achieved by each team.
      • If the roller is playing solo against the field, the roller's score is tripled and matched against the sum of the three scores from the opposing team.
      • The players on the team with the highest combined score win one chip.

      • The players on the team with the lowest score on the hole win one chip.
      • If the roller is playing solo against the field, the rollers score is matched against the lowest score from the other three players.
